- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg
- ½ cup unsalted butter, softened

- 2 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- ½ cup buttermilk
- 2 cups peeled, cored, and chopped apples (preferably Granny Smith)
- ½ cup chopped walnuts (optional)
- Powdered sugar for dusting (optional)
Instructions:
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9-inch round cake pan.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Set aside.
- In a large mixing bowl, cream the softened butter and granulated sugar together until light and fluffy.
- Beat in the eggs, one at a time, followed by the vanilla extract.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, alternating with the buttermilk. Begin and end with the dry ingredients.
- Fold in the chopped apples and walnuts (if using) until evenly distributed throughout the batter.
- Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan, spreading it evenly.
- Bake for 40-45 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Remove the cake from the oven and let it cool in the pan for 10 minutes. Then transfer it to a wire rack to cool completely.
- Once cooled, you can dust the top of the cake with powdered sugar for an optional decorative touch.
- Slice and serve the delicious apple cake on its own or with a dollop of whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
Enjoy this classic apple cake as a delightful treat with a cup of tea or as a comforting dessert for any occasion.
